Sharding in SQL Azure
The federation (sharding) support in SQL Azure is almost upon us. This was introduced at PDC in October last year http://www.msravs.com/audiosearch_demo/default.aspx?&index=Microsoft_PDC&q=federation&qr=All
If you want to read about the federation suppport read SQL Azure PM Cihan’s blog
If you want to get on the early adopter program then go and have a read of the blog and the latest post about about getting nominated http://blogs.msdn.com/b/cbiyikoglu/archive/2011/05/12/federations-product-evaluation-program-now-open-for-nominations.aspx
Federation support is very interesting on a number of fronts. If you are developing a multi-tenant solution then it provides some nice features where buy you don’t need to have 1 SQL Azure DB per client, but if you need to you can. Secondly spreading workload across a number of instances can be achieved by distributing your queries across nodes. The key thing is you don’t have to remember where your data is, SQL Azure will do that for you.
