Get and test SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1, check release notes before proceeding!

In continuation to SQL_Server_2008-ServicePack1_CTP release information it is official that SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 (SP1) is now available. You can use these packages to upgrade any SQL Server 2008 edition.

If you have been involved in SQL 2008 SP1 CTP within your environment then nothing new to know what's new with this SP release. If not then here we go to briefly state about product changes contained, that are made significant investments to ease deployment and management of Service Packs:
  • Slipstream – You are now able to integrate the base installation with service packs (or Hotfixes) and install in a single step.
  • Service Pack Uninstall – You are now able to uninstall only the Service Pack (without removing the whole instance)
  • Report Builder 2.0 Click Once capability

A piece of note about pre-installation of Service Pack 1 on your exisiting SQL Server 2008 instance (test and Production) is that you must have administrative rights on the computer to install. I recommend highly that  you read the Release Notes and Readme before installing this pack. Then again there are 2 ways to download and review the documentation:

Step 1: Download and review the setup documentation.

To view the SQL Server 2008 SP1 Setup documentation on the local computer, do the following:
      1. Download and run SqlSP1_setuphelp.exe.
      2. Follow the instructions to extract the Help file.
      3. Find the location on the local computer where you saved the SqlSP1_setuphelp.chm file.
      4. Double-click SqlSP1_setuphelp.chm to open the Help file.

Step 2: Download the appropriate package by clicking one of the links below.
To start the installation immediately, click Run.
To install SP1 at a later time, click Save.

You can Download the files specified as per your environment, such as 32 or 64 or IA64 bit, as the 3 type of files are available seperately. Finally if you are stuck with a problem that hasn't been resolved or stated on SQL Server 2008 forums on MSDN or any other weblog source then you can submit the query by submitting bugs to the Connect Feedback Center.
