SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 2 CTP available for testing - SQL Server Knowledge Sharing Network (@sqlmaster)

SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 2 CTP available for testing

SQL Server Program team announced the CTP release of SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 2, as per the download page:

The CTP version of SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2) is now available. You can use these packages to upgrade any of the following SQL Server 2008 editions:
  • Enterprise
  • Standard
  • Evaluation
  • Developer
  • Workgroup

This SP2 CTP  contains all the cumulative updates that are released after SQL server 2008 SP1 which is CU 8. All the 3 platforms X86, IA64 & X64 releases are available, the next obvious question is what's new with this SP2, they are as follows:

- SQL Server Utility: this new utility helps the users to model all SQL related entities in a simple/grouped view. If you are working on SQL Server 2008 R2 then Utility Explorer. As per MSDN reference : Utility Explorer and SQL Server Utility viewpoints in SQL Server Management Studio provide administrators a holistic view of resource health through an instance of SQL Server that serves as a utility control point (UCP). For more information about the SQL Server Utility, see Managing the SQL Server Utility.

- Data-Tier Applications: same as in SQL Server 2008 R2 DAC operations for SQL 2008 version is supported. Again documentation refers: A DAC provides a single unit for authoring, deploying, and managing the data-tier objects instead of having to manage them separately. A DAC allows tighter integration of data-tier development with the development of the associated application code see Understanding Data-tier Applications.

- Reporting Services in SharePoint Integrated mode: THis is a feature pack based add-in that allows SharePoint 2007 version to connect to SQL Server 2008 R2 report instances. The new features include from What's New in SQL Server 2008 R2 page :

  • Improved handling of credentials and shared data sources.
  • Utilization of the existing instances of Report Builder configured on the Report Server.
  • Support for Report Part Gallery, shared datasets, and shared report items.
  • Report Builder 3.0
  • ATOM feed renderer.

Just a note that this add-in support SQL 2008 & SQL 2008 R2 Report Services, but not for SharePoint 2010 version products.

A final caution is this is CTP release which means a beta version that should not be deployed on your production at all, waiting until final release of SP2. So this should be used for testing purpose only. If you happen stuck by any problems & issues do not report to Customer Services & Support (CSS) you can post on MSDN forums for SQL Server 2008 to obtain response.

Similar to this database engine version of SQL Server 2008 you can obtain CTP version of SQL Server 2008 Express Edition or Express Editon with can be obtained from here.  Oh wait I said about it but not referred the download link, go here to download & test SQL Server 2008 Sp2 CTP.
